Crosswalk was originally a Softimage initiative to help transfer XSI content in and out of Max and Maya pipelines using the latest dotXSI, COLLADA, and FBX standards. Crosswalk for Max is optimized for dotXSI version 6.0, enabling Max to read the dotXSI format using the plugin. Max doesn't need to be installed on the same system as XSI to enable data transfer.

This plugin exports skeletal based character models and their animations from Max into cal3d files.

Cal3d is a skeletal based 3D character animation library written in C++ in a platform-/graphic API-independent way. Originally designed to be used in a 3D client for Worldforge, it evolved into a stand-alone product which can be used in many different kinds of projects.

This version of the plugin was recompiled for Max 9 (32-bit and 64-bit) by Stjepan Stamenkovic from the Open Outcast project.

It supports weights in the SMD file and will create a skin modifer for the reference model, it can also rebuild the smoothing groups from the vertex normals in the SMD file although this can take some time if the model is large.

AXE is a fully-featured DirectX file exporter plugin designed to provide consistent, flexible and reliable data conversion. It supports standard and multi-subobject or DirectX shader materials, editable patch, editable mesh or editable poly geometry, skin and physique modifiers. The latest release can even convert a standard material with multiple UV coordinates to a DirectX material(.fx) and generate shader code such as tangent-space normal mapping.

This free version of AXE is a slightly restricted of AXE Pro, the commercial version of the exporter, and is only for use on non-commercial projects.
